B is for Banana

Do You Really Know Me?
I bet that you have eaten a banana in the last month or even week. Well, this banana would like to challenge you to banana knowledge. Do you really know this fruit you eat?
Let's debunk the biggest myth that you keep spreading about my kind. We do NOT grow on trees. There are no such things as banana trees. We are grown on plants. No, they are not the same thing. Trees have "stems" that are made out of wood. Plants are made out of that fleshy green material. That is what we are grown on. In fact we are the largest plant on this planet that is not on a wooden stem. Please stop spreading these rumors. It is very embarrasing to our relatives the lillies and orchids.
Don't believe everything those cartoons tell you. We do not grow so close to the ground that you can just walk along and pick us. We grow to 25 feet high. That is much taller than your average man, cartoon rabbit, or tasmanian devil.
You cannot eat us right from the tree. We should be picked green and then ripened over time to ensure better taste. Only after being picked does our sugar levels rise from a mere 2% while waiting to 20% with all the excitement of being picked. We take pride in our flavor so don't ruin it by letting us ripen on thePLANT. We are eager to grace your fruit bowl.
We are not native to the Americas. Though we are the most popular fruit in this hemisphere, we were really discovered in India by Alexander the Great in 327 B.C. When the Spanish came to the Americas, the monks brought the banana roots and found a very receptive soil. There are many varieties still in Asia that are a part of the everyday diet.
You, Americans. We love you because you love us. You eat on average 28 pounds a year. That is per person. Wow! Maybe it is the good things in us like fiber, potassium, and vitamin C not to mention iron. We also don't have any sodium, cholesterol, or fat. So eat away!!!!!
We are not a seasonal fruit. In fact, we are harvested all year round. See how eager we are to meet you?!
Just 3 of us medium guys weigh 1 pound. Think of that as you pick us at your local grocery store.
Do you know what a cluster of us bananas are called that grow on our PLANTS? We are known as hands and us individual guys are known as fingers. Get it? Pretty clever of us, eh?
If you are sick, then come to us. We can help with so many of your problems: smoking, ulcers, constipation, blood pressure, anemica, PMS, depression, morning sickness, heartburn, nerves, and brain power.
As you can tell we are the super fruits in your grocery store. Stop by and check us out.
If you think eating us plain is the only way to savor good looking blokes like us, then here are a few sites to give you other ideas on how to use us to our full potential. Until we meet again.....
P.S. - Please stop singing that ridiculous banana song. It is way too embarrassing. Why couldn't you come up with something more substantial and solid. You do us such an injustice.

Cool-- First hub I have ever read written by a banana. Very creative and informative.
I'm a big fan of you bananas. I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't know that you didn't grow on trees. They do look like trees to me, but what do I know?!
You're full of very good stuff, and the banana recipes sound delicious. You've convinced me; I'm going to eat a banana now!
Um, I don't want to antagonise you, but what's the banana song? I'm not sure I know that one...
Welcome to hubpages banana, thanks for the info.
Thank you, Banana! I remember an abandoned housing tract in Hawaii where sugar cane and bananas still grew. Playground Paradise!
Is "Macarena" or "Day-O" the offending song?
Sheesh, sorry about that! Please delete all the duplicates.
So that's the song! Yeah, I suppose all that Banana Fanna Fo-ing can get awfully old.
OH, I thought you were talking about the Chiquita Banana song!
My father-in-law had several reasons for not liking bananas:
1. They are yellow. (?)
2. They are crooked. ( apparently he favored more symmetrical fruits.)
3. (MY favorite) They have too much flour in them. ( They do have a different texture than most other fruits.)
Well, you would bet wrong because I buy a dollar bag of bananas at the store every week and have them plain, in banana bread, in shakes, and just about any other way I can get the 'et up before they all turn black! Bananas are good and good for you! :)
Great hub! I heard that guy who wrote "Bananas: The Fate of the Fruit That Changed the World" on NPR a few weeks back. He was pretty interesting. He said due to diseases and so forth we may see bananas disappear in our lifetime! oh no! I love 'em. But they definitely have gone up in price. Used to be around 29 cents a pound a year or two ago, now they are around 59 cents a pound around here.
Great hub! I love banans even though they can't really be grown here except in hothouses. I used to give my children mashed bananas as a weening food when they were babies.
I like Bananas with evaporated milk poured over the sliced up banana and sugar scattered on top, Yummy.
Bananas are also an excellent treat for dogs and help to ensure your dog's heart remains healthy.
Great Hub :)
Very Cool Hub :)The banana has got to be one of my favorite fruits. I usually pick up a bundle when I go shopping and eat them plain or with peanut butter. In fact, when I was a child, I probably lived off of peanut butter banana sandwiches. I will have to let my dog try one next time, like mistyhorizon2003 said, I bet she would like them too.
great post; keep it up!
Take a bow, banana! Great hub RGraf - thanks! Maybe a banana ballad would be in order to replace the banana song? I have 3 varieties growing in my garden so if you ever swing by this way, you can talk to them, sing to them, whatever before you eat them :)
about this page..
B is for Best..
Not only entertaining, but a title recalling the Alphabet Murders series of Sue Grafton (A is for Alibi...etc.). Stop laughing - there COULD be a murderous banana, especially if Shadesbreath and B.T. Evilpants start to influence bananas. lol.
I think I want to send a link to your Hub from mine [A Guide to the Banana] that tells how Pres. Eisenhower & the Feds promoted bananas south of the border to import up here with a campaign called "The Kremlin Hates Bananas."
Cheers!
Good hub, interesting little-known facts for us who are ignorant of the banana. I enjoyed reading it.
Good hub. Now I will go bananas and have bananas....LOL
RGraf - you have your own dedicated box at A Guide to the Banana.
Of course, you will now have to write a fruit Hub for each letter of the alphabet. Much fun! What fruit begins with Z I wonder...? :)
Yes, my brain is definitely on a signal for something tonight. Glad it's a fun something. Looking forward to all your Hubs on foods. :)
There are some fruits begining with Z: http://www.crfg.org/pubs/fl/commonSZ.html
Amazing! And friends in Thailand tell me they have different fruits every month of the year. We are limited in the Midwest US and the other fruits and vegetables sound exciting.
Who knew a bunch of bananas could help a bunch of ailments.
Very informative
Thank you
kenny
Great Banana info. I was at Dole plant in Hawaii earlier this year and besides pineapples they also had Banana trees. I never got to try a really fresh banana but I am sure they taste a lot different then a store bought one
Bananas the fruit with 'a-peel' woops I meant to spell appeal. Who could have guessed all that about Bananas. Thanks for sharing.
